Committees

A great way for HBOC syndrome carriers and their families to get to know each other is to get involved on a committee.  Committees begin in November and operate for one year and new committee members can join at any time. Meetings are one per month, the time/date of which is set by the Chair.   Dial-in service is available.

Promotions

Purpose  To increase awareness of the organization and its cause in varying target groups such as those directly or indirectly affected by HBOC syndrome, the medical community and the public at large.
Description  This committee, under the direction of a Board member and/or the CEO, dialogues to enhance current initiatives, identifies new opportunities and develops action plans to utilize varying media, including but not limited to: speaking opportunities, print, television, and social media. Where possible, committee members will assist with delivery and/or gathering the resources required to carry plans through.
Resourcing  This committee will strive to draw those directly or indirectly affected who are comfortable in speaking roles, active in social media or willing to share their stories, along with enthusiastic and energetic members from various backgrounds; including marketing, communications, administrative, and senior management.

Events

Purpose  To increase funding for the organization and its programs through events.
Description  This committee, under the direction of a Board member and/or the CEO, dialogues to enhance current plans and identifies new opportunities, keeping in mind how limited the staff is. Committee members will assist with plan delivery and gathering any additional volunteer and financial resources required to carry plans through.
Resourcing This committee will strive to draw those directly or indirectly affected who are interested in making a difference in the present and for future generations, and energetic members from various backgrounds; especially fundraising, marketing, creative arts, entertainment, event management, administrative, and senior management.

Education

Purpose  To provide information and tools to those directly and indirectly affected by HBOC syndrome, the medical community and the public regarding the differences between hereditary and spontaneous cancer, screening and prevention options and available services, resources and research.
Description  This committee, under the direction of a Board member and/or the CEO, dialogues to enhance current plans and identifies new educational opportunities. Committee members will assist at events and/or help gather the speakers, resources and funding required. Established events include the annual OUR GENES Conference/Trade Show and participation in Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Days.
Resourcing This committee will strive to draw those directly or indirectly affected and energetic members from various backgrounds; especially education, medical, event management, communications, administrative, and senior management.

Advocacy

Purpose  To identify issues facing those directly and indirectly affected by HBOC syndrome and the medical/research community, and effect positive change.
Description  This committee, under the direction of a Board member and/or the CEO, dialogues to identify issues facing the target group as a whole, and develops plans to address those issues. Committee members will assist with plan delivery where possible and assist with gathering the additional resources required to carry plans through. Examples of advocacy initiatives include media releases/interviews, speaking engagements, stakeholder relationship building and meetings with key healthcare and government representatives.
Resourcing  This committee will strive to draw those directly or indirectly affected and energetic members from various backgrounds; especially political, healthcare, senior management, strategic planning and those comfortable speaking in front of crowds or on camera.

Support

Purpose  To provide direct and indirect support to those directly or indirectly affected by HBOC syndrome.
Description  This committee, under the direction of a Board member and/or the CEO provides comfort to those requesting it. Committee members will assist with hospital visits, phone calls, email communications, personal visits and will liaise with support staff to search out appropriate peer connections. Training will be provided.
Resourcing This committee will strive to draw those directly or indirectly affected and energetic members from various backgrounds; especially those with psychological, medical, charitable, or volunteer experience.
